Local golfer beat at U.S. Amateur, but will play in 2015 Masters and U.S. Open

Listowel’s Corey Conners found himself in the golf spotlight on Sunday.

He was looking to become just the third Canadian to win U.S. Amateur, but his bid fell short.

South Korea’s Gunn Yang claimed the title with a 2-and-1 victory over Conners in the 36-hole final at Atlanta Athletic Club.

At No. 776, Yang becomes the lowest-ranked player in the world amateur standings to win the country’s biggest title for non-professional golfers. Along the way, he beat five players inside the top 100, including the 44th-ranked Conners.

Both Conners and Yang will also play in the Masters and U.S. Open next year.
