Guelph Transit to resume on Friday, August 8

Guelph Transit buses will be back on the road by the end of the week.

City Council along with more than 200 members of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1189 have voted to accept a tentative deal reached last week.

The votes were held yesterday with Union President Andrew Cleary telling 570 News, 80 percent of members voted to accept the deal that includes a 8.5 percent wage hike over four years.

Cleary says with the City also ratifying the agreement, maintenance workers will report to work this morning.

He says they will ensure the buses are safe and operational and ready for the road by Friday.

City officials announced free transit rides until August 15th to allow residents time to purchase bus passes and as a way for the city to let citizens know, they recognize there has been an impact on their lives.

Cleary says he is not surprised at the Friday service date as they have had a plan in place to make sure service would be restored as quick as possible once a deal was agreed upon.

Transit workers had been locked out since July 21 after ATU members rejected a previous tentative agreement.

They had been operating without a contract for one year.
