Severe thunderstorm watch for Waterloo Region

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Waterloo Region and surrounding areas.

Environment Canada says conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms which could produce strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain at times.

The weather service is also reminding that large hail can damage property while strong wind can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings and break branches off trees. They also say these storms are capable of producing tornadoes, and they’re advising people in these areas to be prepared for severe weather.

Officials are advising the public to stay indoors when a thunderstorm strikes.

Meteorologists expect to update the alerts as required.
