Grocery expert says M & M faces challenges and opportunities

The editor of Canadian Grocer magazine says there are challenges and opportunities facing M & M Meat Shops.

Rob Gerlesbeck tells 570 News that at one time, the company virtually owned the specialty frozen food market, but now faces much more competition.  “You have chains like Metro and Loblaw with President’s Choice, they’re coming out with more frozen gourmet burgers and hors d’oeuvres and even Walmart has its own line of frozen food now.”

Gerlesbeck says that despite declining sales, M & M has an opportunity to capitalize on what he calls ‘the time-starved customer.’  “M & M’s challenge is to get shoppers to think of their store and go there and say ‘we can pick up an entree and some fries or a couple dishes and thirty minutes later they’ll be ready.”

He says the company could also do with a brand upgrade and a new marketing strategy. “They haven’t done that much promoting it.  You do see their flyers a lot, they have an on-line option now, I believe, where you can go on-line and order some stuff and go pick it up at the stores.  It probably needs a freshening up.”

Gerlesbeck says one thing the company has going for it is they have great locations, adding it’s easy for customers to get in and out quickly.
