Four Toronto companies pay $84,000 for violating telemarketing rules

OTTAWA – Canada’s telecom regulator says it has taken action against four Toronto-area home-improvement companies for alleged violations of the telemarketing rules.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission says the companies have paid $84,000 in penalties for making telemarketing calls — directly or through a third-party firm — to people on the National Do Not Call List.

The CRTC says it launched an investigation after a number of Canadians who had registered their phone numbers on that list complained they were receiving unsolicited telemarketing calls.

In addition to the settlements, the companies — Ecosmart Home Services Inc., Loyal Seal Windows and Doors, Home Comfort Group and Pegasus Peaks — have also agreed to end their current telemarketing practices.

Separately, the CRTC has issued a notice of violation to a fifth company — Action Windows and Doors — with a penalty of $24,000.

More than 12 million people are registered on the National Do Not Call List, which was launched in 2008.

So far, the CRTC’s enforcement actions have yielded more than $4 million in penalties and $741,000 in other payments.
