Research shows summer camp increases positive development for children

Professor Troy Glover, Director of Healthy Communities Research Network at the University of Waterloo conducted studies on the benefits of children who attend summer camps.

Glover found children experience changes and growth in social integration, environmental awareness, self-confidence, personal development, emotional intelligence and their attitude towards physical activities.

The project was called Canadian Summer Camp research project. It measured all of the above areas and found positive development in all areas.

Glover says its important to talk to your kids about what they are interested in before choosing a camp. He also said adults who attended camp as children used the connections and social skills they obtained well into adulthood.

“The kids learn to appreciate nature, but they also learn teamwork and leadership skills. Camp gives kids a safe space to be who they are. It’s a place where often they are not with friends they from school, so they do not have to be who they are at school.”
