Canoeist rescued at long point beach

A Waterloo man was rescued from Lake Erie after his canoe capsized in Norfolk County.

Ontario Provincial Police say the 52-year-old man from Waterloo was 1.6 KM from the long point shore last night, and headed towards thin ice in the inner bay when his canoe tipped.

The man’s family called 9-1-1.

He ended up spending thirty minutes in the water before fire fighters arrived to help.

Opp say he was treated for hypothermia in the hospital, and has since been released.

Police say this is a reminder for anyone planning to head out on the water to wear cold water suits and ensure you have the proper safety gear.
