Leafs hire Shanahan as president and alternate governor

Brendan Shanahan has been hired as the Toronto Maple Leafs’ president and alternate governor.

The team announced the hiring today.

Shanahan, a Toronto native, had been serving as the NHL’s director of player safety since 2011.

The 45-year-old played 1,524 career NHL games and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame last year.

The team said in a press release that Shanahan would begin his role immediately, adding there will be no further comment until a Monday news conference.

Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment president Tim Leiweke and Leafs vice-president and general manager Dave Nonis are expected to be at that news conference along with Shanahan.
