North Bay and Petes off to Round 2

Former Kitchener Ranger Ben Thomson assisted on the game winning goal midway through the third period as the North Bay Battalion edged the Niagara Ice Dogs 2-1 in Game 7 of their opening round series.

The Battalion will face the Barrie Colts in the second round, with the series opening Friday in North Bay.

Another former Ranger, Eric Ming, scored the lone goal for the Ice Dogs in what turned out to be his final OHL game.

Ming scored a career high 33 goals in his overage season, plus four more in seven playoff games.

He’ll attend Queen’s University in Kingston next year.

Elsewhere, the Peterborough Petes came back from a 3-0 series deficit to shock the Kingston Frontenacs in Game 7.

Nick Ritchie scored the OT winner in Peterborough’s 2-1 victory.

The 6th-seeded Petes are the only underdog to advance through the first round of the OHL playoffs.

They’ll play Oshawa in Round 2.

In the West, the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds open their second round series at home tonight to Erie.

The Guelph Storm entertain the London Knights in the other series, which opens Friday.
