Canada wins silver in women’s Olympic snowboard cross

Canada’s Dominique Maltais has won a silver medal in women’s snowboard cross at the Sochi Olympics.

The rider from Petite-Riviere-St-Francois, Que., finished well back of the Czech Republic’s Eva Samkova on a mild, sunny afternoon at Rosa Khutor Extreme Park.

France’s Chloe Trespeuch was third.

It is Maltais’s second medal in the event. She won bronze at the 2006 Turin Olympics.

Defending Olympic champion Maelle Ricker of West Vancouver, B.C., fell in her quarter-final heat. She suffered a wrist injury last month that required surgery
