Canadian Business unveils list of Canada’s 100 wealthiest people

The 100 wealthiest people in Canada are worth a whopping $230-billion, Canadian Business magazine estimated Thursday.

“It’s been a banner year for the super-rich,” the magazine noted, adding the group’s combined wealth is more than the total gross domestic product of many countries.

The combined net worth of the wealthiest among us surged by more than 15 per cent, the biggest increase since 2000 – but the names at the top remained similar.

Once again, the Thomson family – which owns Thomson Reuters and Woodbridge Co. Ltd. – topped the list with a net worth of $26.1 billion. That’s an increase of 30 per cent from last year.

The Thomson family has been at the top of the list since Canadian Business first started publishing it 15 years ago.

Below is a list of who else made it to the Top 5:

No. 2: Galen Weston
As owner of George Weston Ltd., Loblaw Cos. Ltd. and Holt Renfrew, Weston has a net worth of $10.4 billion – an increase of 24 per cent from 2012. Weston was also No. 2 last year.

No. 3: Irving family
The owners of Irving Oil Ltd. and J.D. Irving Ltd. have a net worth of $7.85 billion, a drop of three per cent from last year but enough to keep them in third place.

No.  4: Rogers family
The owners of Rogers Communications Inc. have a net worth of $7.6 billion, up 18 per cent from last year. They were also No. 4 last year.

Rogers Communications is the parent company of Canadian Business, CityNews and this radio station.

No. 5: James Pattison
The man behind the Jim Pattison Group has a net worth of $7.39 billion, an increase of 20 per cent from last year. Pattison, 85, was also in fifth place last year.
