Provincial EQAO Results Show Weakness in Elementary Math Skills

Just as the new school year is set to begin – memories of the last one are made public.

The provincial EQAO results were released Wednesday.

The story this year is all about elementary level mathematics.

In 2013, 67% of Grade 3 students met the provincial math standard, this down 3% from five years ago.

Grade 6 students didn’t fare much better with only 57% meeting the standard in 2013 – compared to 63% five years ago. In fact 19% of those students had originally met the provincial standard in Grade 3 and then were unsuccessful in Grade 6.

On the positive side, literacy skills in the elementary level are increasing each year.

Up 7% over the past 5 years, 68% of Grade 3 students and 77% of Grade 6 students are now meeting the provincial reading standard.

Elementary schools are getting better at helping students who did not meet the standard when they were in Grade 3 to improve and meet it in Grade 6.

Students whose first language is not English are also improving and catching up quickly to the general population.

In fact, 61% of Grade 3 and 68% of Grade 6 English language learners are now meeting the provincial reading standard.

Heading to the provincial secondary school results:

In Grade 9:

84% of students enrolled in the academic math course met the provincial standard this year, a seven-percentage-point increase over the past five years.

71% of Grade 9 students are enrolled in the academic math course.

44% of students enrolled in the applied math course met the provincial standard this year, a six-percentage-point increase over the past five years.

82% of participating Grade 10 students were successful on the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test on their first try.

Individual reports for elementary schools and their boards will be released September 18th. Secondary school reports will be released on September 25th.

A detailed description of the provincial results can be found on the EQAO website.
