Kitchener woman charged with allegedly poisoning children

The Waterloo Regional Police Service is alerting the public following the arrest of a Kitchener woman who allegedly poisoned two young children.

32 year old Christine Allen, who may have also used the name Christine Keilbar, was arrested after a lengthy investigation and is charged with two counts each of Aggravated Assault and Administering a Noxious Substance.

In March of 2013, police were alerted to an incident in which a child under the care of the accused was brought to a local hospital with serious physical symptoms. The child recovered but returned to the hospital at a later date with similar symptoms.

Detectives learned of a second child who had become ill in July 2010 with similar symptoms while in the care of the accused.

Police allege that Allen administered an over-the-counter eye care product in these incidents, which if ingested can cause symptoms such as abnormal drowsiness, low blood pressure, respiratory difficulty and decreased heart rates, specifically in younger children.

Allen operated a home day care in Kitchener from 2009 to 2011 and police are concerned that other children may have been victimized.

The accused is remanded in custody with a further court date of July 24, 2013 at the Ontario Court of Justice in Kitchener.

Both children recovered from their illnesses after spending several days in hospital receiving medical treatment.

The investigation is continuing and anyone with information is requested to call Central Division Detectives at 519-653-7700 ext. 4437 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
