Kitchener gets washed out

Everything is returning to normal in Kitchener after a heavy downpour this afternoon led to some flash flooding. Areas hit the hardest include Fairway Road and Fairview Park Mall.

Leah Landriault, the malls marketing manager tells 570 News Sears is closed for the rest of the day. Landriault says the clean-up is complete as the rain has now moved off and water levels are receding.

Kitchener Fire Chief Tim Beckett tells 570 News because we received so much rain in a short period of time, it was over capacity for the systems as they were designed. They’re now working properly though, “Operations crews for the city will continue to be out ensuring that drains and that are not clogged and continue to remove the water as quickly as possible.”

Beckett adds residents should check their basements to make sure there isn’t any flooding and to make sure their sump pumps are working, “And if you run into any issues where you’re concerned with flooding in your house, don’t hesitate from an emergency aspect of things, don’t hesitate to call 9-1-1. Better to be safe than sorry.”

Waterloo Region Police say conditions on area roads have improved significantly. Earlier today, there had been reports regarding flooded streets and intersections in the Fairview Road/Weber Street East area of Kitchener as well as along Franklin Street, Thaler Avenue, Wilson Avenue and Manitou Drive.
