2012 Athlete of the Year nominees announced

The nominees are out for the 2012 Civitan Sports Athlete of the Year Award.

It was Ken Brooks who came up with the idea 15 years ago and helped to put together a committee and launch the first award ceremony in 1999.

Brooks says when it comes to being nominated for Local Athlete of the Year, they’re looking for the best of the best.

“We’re looking for the best athletes in their sport. So whoever is excelling in their sports, and that is any sport. It could be pole vaulting, ice dancing, it could be field hockey, normal sports like hockey, football, golf, any sports. People that excel at the highest level in their sport and the requirement is at an provincial, national or international level. Most of our athletes are international athletes.”

Nominees are chosen from Kitchener, Waterloo and the Townships of Woolwich, Wellesley and Wilmot.

Seven of the eight nominees this year are on Team Canada and they all play a wide variety of sports. This year they also have two paralympians on the nominee list.

This years nominees are:

Chelsea Aubry – Basketball
Maddie Buttinger – Track and Field (Pentathlon)
Kory Lorentz – Standing Amputee Hockey
Dustin Miller – Speed Skating
Tyler Miller – Wheelchair Basketball
Garrett Rank – Golf
Leah Robinson – Track and Field (400M)
