A 17-month-old Stratford girl died at McMaster Hospital in Hamilton last night after the vehicle she was in was rear-ended by a cube van on Highway 7/8 westbound just west of Fischer-Hallman Road.
OPP constable Dave Woodford tells 570 News the car had broken down shortly after 6:30 p.m. and had come to a stop on the highway when it was struck. Woodford says the driver of the van was arrested for impaired driving.
Woodford says the child’s mother was listed in critical but stable condition in a Hamilton hospital and the father sustained minor injuries.
No charges have been laid as of yet.
7/8 westbound was closed for several hours as police investigated.

Prohibition is not the answer. Have you not read about that failed experiment from the 30s?
Horrible tragedy! I hope the drunk driver gets the ultimate punishment. Another reason why car companies should make the breathalysers standard on all new cars and the government should make it mandatory.
So very tragic. My heart goes out to the family.
Another drunk taking another childs life, how senseless,my condolences to the family. The sad part in reality, here in Canada, the driver will not get much more than a slap on the wrist and told not to do it again.
My heart goes out to that little girl’s family. Why does this continue to happen? It’s high time the courts get serious with these murderers – long prison sentences will send a much needed message and protect us all in the process. What a tragedy.
25 YEARS, no parole. Who ever was driving knew after accepting the third drink that it would be WRONG to drive!
Why again another needless tragic accident. Bless this shaken and broken family.
My heart breaks for this family. Alcohol takes yet another young life. When is our society, government and Law going to realize that this substance should be illegal….just like drugs??!!!
