Most actively traded companies on the TSX, TSX Venture Exchange markets

TORONTO – Some of the most active companies traded Wednesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (12,714.05 down 96.16 points):

Nexen Inc. (TSX:NXY). Oil and gas. Up 13 cents, or 0.47 per cent, at $27.87 on 20,454,491 shares. Chinese company CNOOC Ltd.’s $15.1-billion takeover of Nexen was approved Tuesday by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States.

Bombardier Inc. (TSX:BBD.B). Transportation equipment. Up 17 cents, or 4.14 per cent, at $4.28 on 13,752,333 shares. A Russian leasing company will buy up to 42 Bombardier CSeries aircraft in a potential $3.42-billion deal. The plane and train maker announced the deal after Transport Canada certified the plane’s Pratt & Whitney engine.

Catamaran Corp. (TSX:CCT). IT solutions. Up $1.32, or 2.41 per cent, at $56 on 12,125,002 shares.

B2Gold Corp. (TSX:BTO). Miner. Down 19 cents, or 5.96 per cent, at $3 on 6,822,887 shares. The gold sector led all the subgroups in the red, dropping 4.35 per cent to 251.89 points. The price of the bullion closed at its lowest level in seven months at US$1,578 per oz., down $26.20.

Yamana Gold (TSX:YRI). Miner. Down 54 cents, or 3.55 per cent, at $14.69 on 6,121,477 shares. The Toronto-based miner said after markets closed that its fourth-quarter earnings improved to $169.1 million, or 22 cents per share, from year-earlier $89.6 million, or 12 cents per share. Revenues grew to $625 million from $568.7 million.

Kinross Gold Corp. (TSX:K). Miner. Down 43 cents, or 5.35 per cent, at $7.61 on 6,012,279 shares.

TSX Venture Exchange (1,131.17 down 40.63 points):

Orko Silver Corp. (TSXV:OK). Miner. Down 25 cents, or 10.08 per cent, at $2.23 on 10,188,314 shares. Coeur d’Alene Mines Corp. (TSX:CDM) announced a definitive agreement with junior explorer Orko in a transaction pegged at about $350 million. U.S.-based Coeur trumped First Majestic Silver Corp.’s (TSX:FR) friendly offer in December.

Samaranta Mining Corp. (TSXV:SAX). Mineral explorer and developer. Up a penny, or 28.57 per cent, at 4.5 cents on 9,946,781 shares. Samarium Group Holding Ltd. made an unsolicitied offer Tuesday to buy not less than 51 per cent of the issued and outstanding public shares of the company at a price of 12 cents per share.

Boralex (TSX:BLX). Energy. Up 14 cents, or 1.53 per cent, at $9.30 on 33,893 shares. Renewable energy producer Boralex said its fourth-quarter profit plunged 85 per cent to $1.2 million as revenue from energy sales slid 6.5 per cent due to weaker hydrology and the transformation of its thermal power business.

Talisman Energy Inc. (TSX:TLM). Energy. Down 10 cents, or 0.79 per cent, at $12.60 on 2,124,978 shares. The Calgary-based international oil and gas producer laid off 90 employees at its Calgary office as part of an effort to reorganize and streamline its Canadian operations. The company says low North American natural gas prices have caused it to reduce spending.
