Dunfield Theatre getting ready for Mary Poppins

Opening night at the new Dunfield Theatre in Cambridge is just over three weeks away.

“Mary Poppins” will be the first production to take the stage. Actors and the rest of the crew got a tour of the new facility and began rehearsals on Tuesday.

Opening night is March 6th and the show runs until April 28th.

Mary will be played by Kitchener resident Jayme Armstrong, who calls it the role of a lifetime.

“You get to do a little bit of everything, you get to sing, act, fly and do all the magic tricks.”

“It’s a role that people know so well and love so much…I think it really resonates with kids and I think that’s going to be a lot of fun.” added Armstrong.

Bert will be played by New York City based actor Mark Ledbetter, who’s wife is also part of the production.

He says the show has a special place in his heart. “It’s a movie I grew up watching and I made my Broadway debut in the original Broadway company for Mary Poppins and understudied the role there for several years.”

Director Nigel West says it’s the first time in North America, Disney has allowed its original production to have a new creative team.

The cast will be rehearsing eight hours a day leading up to opening night.
