Flood watch issued for the Nith River in New Hamburg and Ayr

The Grand River Conservation Authority has issued a Flood Watch for the Nith River in New Hamburg and Ayr.

Officials with the GRCA say 30 to 45 mm of rain has fallen over most of the watershed over the past two days and the rain, along with warm temperatures, river levels could reach flooding thresholds in areas along the Nith River.

A level 1 Flood Watch has been issued for New Hamburg and a flood watch is also issued for the Village of Ayr.

Dave Schultz, communications manager with GRCA tells 570 News that ‘the water is very cold and it is moving really quickly and the banks are going to be slippery and we don’t want to see pets or children, or people going in after them, go into the river.’

The GRCA also warns of flooding in low-lying areas along the Grand, Conestogo and Speed River.

Water levels are expected to remain high through the weekend.
