Toyota’s Cambridge plant gets a $34 million boost from province and Ottawa

The Cambridge Toyota manufacturing plant is getting $34-million from the federal and provincial governments to create 400 new jobs.

A new assembly line will build 26,000 additional Lexus vehicles, beginning in 2014.

Fifteen-thousand of the new vehicles will be the Lexus RX-450h — the luxury brand’s SUV model which is currently only produced in Japan.

It will be the first hybrid ever built in Canada.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper says they are committed to creating high-quality, high-paying jobs for hard-working Canadians.

He notes Toyota has has kept that commitment through tough times, keeping people employed without interruption through the recession and during the 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

Making his last media appearance as premier, Dalton McGuinty reflected on his relationship with Prime Minister Harper.

He says it is through partnership and working together that they were able to minimize the impact of the recession on the 485,000 jobs in the Canadian auto industry.

Toyota will contribute $125-million toward the new assembly line.
