Layoffs continue at Research In Motion.
As part of the continuing head-count reduction of about 5,000 jobs, to help achieve $1-billion savings in operational costs by the end of the financial year, RIM has outsourced its IT Service Desk to NCR.
RIM’s Global Corporate Communications Manager Nick Manning emailed the following quote to 570 News.
“We understand the difficulties that these changes have on individuals, their families and the community and we are grateful for the continued support and understanding of our community partners. These are difficult but necessary changes that will help put us on the right footing to launch BlackBerry 10 at the end of the month and deliver real value for our stakeholders now and in the future.”
Affected employees were notified on Thursday.
Above & Beyond

Manny has it right, the company has so many ‘managerial’ layers it makes bloated government look streamlined. There are managers who have no one reporting to them – so managing who? How about doing a top-down assessment of the company and removing the barriers to innovation – namely scores of middle-management that keep themselves relevant by stopping ideas from moving up or implementing them because they have to do some work. It’s a shame such a company resulted in this. Thorsten is doing a decent job, but it will take years to clean up that mess.
making value for investors??!!! To create value, get rid of the numerous VPs and directors which still exist in the company and are getting huge paychecks without doing any work. Get rid of the former Motorola people who have changed the culture of innovation at RIM to a culture of backstabbing and game playing. Laying off hardworking people won’t change anything.
Value for the “stakeholders” eh? You think the people on IT Service Desk didn’t have a “stake” in the company? Oh well…I predict the new BBX will flare and flash out as quickly as webOS did. Maybe RIM should hire Russell Brand now and get it over with…
I doubt this company will see the end of 2013 intact.
I cannot agree with you, Bran.
If you know how inefficient RIM is, you won’t say that.
Sounds horrible for the employees and family but this is a very smart move. Streamlining the company will only help the company move forward and allow them to last.
GM did the same thing and now they are back in full force.
Once Rim proves that the new restructuring and great products are doing well then Rim can hire them plus more people back. The original bozo owners messed it up so the new CEO is just taking the wheel and guiding the company back on their feet.
All is well. Rim will Win!!!
