Rain, freezing rain and now snow

A powerful winter storm is charging up through the American Midwest and is now being felt in Waterloo Region.

First we had rain mixed with snow. Snowfall here is expected to total around 5 centimetres by later tonight.

Accumulations will likely be higher off Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.

Heavy snow is also expected in eastern Ontario with forecasters saying Ottawa could get 30-centimetres by early tomorrow.

The storm, which has battered the U-S Midwest, has led to airlines cancelling some 1,000 flights, mostly at Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway airports.
