Job vacancies rose in September: StatsCan

OTTAWA – Statistics Canada says the number of job vacancies has grown on a year-over-year basis.
The federal agency says there were 267,000 vacancies in September, up 19,000 from September 2011.
As a result, it says there were 5.3 unemployed people for every vacancy that month, down from 5.7 a year earlier.
Statistics Canada says the decline in the ratio of unemployment to job vacancies was all the result of the increase in vacancies.
Provincially, the highest ratio of unemployed people to job vacancies was seen in Newfoundland and Labrador, where there were 11.2 people out of work for every open position.
The lowest ratio was found in Alberta, where there were just 1.7 unemployed people for every job vacancy.
