Research In Motion went through a round of layoffs in recent months, but another local tech company will double in size in the next year.

Waterloo-based Kik is looking to add 25 new employees in that time period.

The three-year-old company is another University of Waterloo start-up, located at King and Weber Street.

The company describes Kik Messenger as “the simplest, fastest, most life-like chat experience you can get on a smartphone.” There are now over 30 million users across the globe.

Heather Galt is Kik’s Vice-President of Marketing and recruits for the company and says most of the jobs they’re trying to fill are on the technical side.

That includes mobile app. developers, mobile web developers and people who can manage their infrastructure.

“It’s a challenge to find the talent we need.” Galt told 570 News.

“One of the things we find most compelling about the work here at Kik is the kind of problems you get to work on…highly complex leading edge type of challenges.”

As with most tech companies there are plenty of perks too. Wildcraft caters two meals a day at Kik. There is an on-site gym, ping-pong table and what Galt describes as a very casual environment.

Kik currently has 25 employees.
