The trial began Thursday in Kitchener for a GRT driver charged with hitting a teen at the Homer Watson roundabout in October 2011.

The incident sparked a public outcry over the safety of roundabouts.

Cassi Lam was left with serious head and upper body injures when she attempted to cross the roundabout on Block Line Road.

Rafael Quintanilla is facing a charge of careless driving.

The lawyer for the Lam family, Stacey Stevens tells CTV “Its’ just been a very, very stressful, emotional, trying day for her (Cassi).”

Lam is scheduled to take the stand when the trial resumes on Tuesday.

In July, the family launched a $17 million lawsuit. The City of Kitchener, Region of Waterloo and Grand River Transit were all named as defendants.
