You may have noticed some really foul smells coming from the Waterloo landfill in recent months. The good news, that work should be completed in the coming weeks.
The odour was especially bad on Saturday afternoon near Erb and Erbsville Road and at The Boardwalk Shopping Centre.
Crews have been expanding a new area to put trash on the north portion of the landfill. Most of that work is done, but there’s still some earth being moved there.
Other odours residents may have noticed could be the result of additional gas collection piping being installed on site. That work should be done in a few weeks.
The region says the collection of that gas, through a generation facility, produces enough electricity to power 5,000 homes.
“Prevailing wind direction…as well as the humidity and temperature swings…all those things tend to impact the odour and how long it hangs around.” said Donna Serrati,
Manger of Engineering and Programs with the Region of Waterloo’s Waste Management Division.
Serrati says they always try their best to reduce the odour, including applying granulars.
She also tells 570 News they have only had one odour complaint in recent weeks.
What’s that smell?
