Regional Council has passed a Federation of Canadian Municipalities resolution to be sent to VIA Rail.

It calls on VIA to maintain and improve rail service and frequency across the country. While asking that the FCM be informed of major service changes.

Kitchener Mayor Carl Zehr brought the resolution forward, and tells 570 News it was ever more poignant, being the last day the early train would leave Kitchener for Toronto.

“It was coincidental of course, but it is poignant and clearly demonstrates that cutting rail service simply is not the answer to our transit issues. Not only in this region, but across the country.”

Zehr says this resolution sends a clear message to the Federal government: Canada needs much better rail service.

Rail advocacy group, Transport Action, is hosting a public meeting tonight at 7 o’clock to discuss the changes. The meeting will be held inside Regional Council Chambers.
