Vigil to honour Ashley Smith

Today marks the 5th anniversary of Ashley Smith’s death at Kitchener’s Grand Valley Institution for Women.

The New Brunswick teen’s death from self induced asphyxiation followed years of being shuffled from one institution to another and sparked calls for an inquest.

That probe has yet to get fully started as a series of setbacks, including legal challenges, have kept it from getting off the ground.

Tonight, organizers of the group “Poverty Makes Us Sick” are holding a vigil in her memory.

It’s taking place at Speakers Corner, at King and Benton in Kitchener, from 7 until 8 pm.
