Elementary students’ report cards could appear more streamlined than in the past when they are sent home to parents early next month.

The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario has reportedly sent an advisory to union locals recommending teachers only write the minimum comment required per section – a single line perhaps, and not full paragraphs.

It appears to be related to the ongoing fight between teachers’ unions and the provincial government, however the Federation won’t say that and neither will Waterloo Region’s union president.

Today’s Record reports the local public school board expects the progress reports to be personalized to the student, provide meaningful feedback and include next steps for improvement.

Superintendent Mark Schinkel tells the paper, he wonders if limiting the comments could be “challenging to meet the bar for personalization.”
