Mental Health in the Workplace

In a recent survey from IPSOS Reid, four out of 5 managers and supervisors believe it is their responsibility to help employees who suffer from mental health issues and finds that one out of 5 employees suffer from depression.

This survey follows one conducted in 2007 by IPSOS Reid that found 13 per cent of managers have received training on how to help those suffering from the illness and this number has increased to 33 per cent over the last 5 years.

John Wright, Vice-President of IPSOS Reid Public Affairs tells 570 News, many managers tend to be older and pull from personal experiences when helping employees.

“What we’re seeing here is a sensitivity built into the Human Resource side of the equation,” said Wright.

The survey was commissioned and funded by the Great-West Life Centre for Mental Health in the workplace.

October is Mental Health Month which raises awareness about mental health issues.
