One dead after plane near Calabogie

CALABOGIE, Ont. – A small plane has crashed in Greater Madawaska Twp. west of Calabogie.

A new single-engine Socata TBM 700 plane owned by Timmins, Ontario lawyer Lorenzo Girones reportedly went down at about 12:15 p.m. Monday.

The pilot, killed in the crash, has been identified as Bob Reany, 74, of Port Elgin, Ont.

Sgt. Kristine Rae with the OPP told 1310News that due to the remote location of the crash, officers used ATV’s to get to the wreckage.

Initially, an Ornge rescue air ambulance had also been dispatched but it has since been cancelled.

Witnesses staying at nearby White Pines Resort told 1310News that the small green plane could be seen making loops in the sky and flying very low to the ground before it crashed.

“All pieces around, part of the engine was smoking, part of the wings, fuel tank, cockpit, window, all the pieces were around,” said Greg Veldhuizen.

Provincial police say that the plane was “blown apart” upon impact.

This was the third plane crash in the Ottawa area in the last two weeks, including a plane that crashed into the Ottawa River on Tuesday.

The Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
