The 44th annual Oktoberfest kicks off today and Waterloo Regional Police are reminding motorists not to drink and drive.

Police spokesperson Olaf Heinzel says there will be a number of  programs to ensure public safety.

He tells 570 News that along with having the RIDE program up and running there will also be officers on foot patrol.

Anyone drinking is encouraged to arrange and ride home or have a designated driver.
Grand River Transit and Molson are offering free bus rides during the opening and closing weekends.

In addition, Regional Police will also be working with other police forces in Ontario to check for seatbelt usage and aggressive driving.
