Kitchener city council has shot down a proposal to allow the construction of a grocery store and big box retail development on part of the site of the old Budd auto parts factory.

The move is aimed at keeping that property designated for future industrial development.

The proposal could have seen the creation of 1,000 retail jobs.

However, Mayor Carl Zehr tells this morning’s Record, “We need to retain industrial sites for their purpose.”

Earlier this month, council also reject a proposal to rezone part of the Huron Business Park to allow the construction of a mosque.
