The Region of Waterloo has released a memo to members of Regional Council about the number of people in the region relying on Ontario Works.

In August 2012, versus August 2011, there was a slight increase in the number of people on assistance.

The OW caseload for last month was 8,792 residents. That works out to an increase of 17 people, or 0.2%, drawing assistance compared to the same time period a year ago.

Comparing July 2012, to August 2012, there were 34 more people to draw Ontario Works, an increase of 0.4%.

The OW caseload is 39% higher than September 2008, the beginning of the recession.
