Encouraging food safety numbers

Health officials are encouraged by the low numbers in the latest report on food safety.

Just two establishments were charged in the second quarter of 2012 and a Kitchener catering business was ordered to close because of various infractions.

The report was presented to the Community Services Committee on Tuesday morning.

“Certainly the numbers to fluctuate from quarter to quarter…We aim to have a on-going relationship with all of the food premises…and try and keep food safety at the highest level in the region in partnership with these operators.” said Dr. Liana Nolan, Waterloo Region’s Medical Officer of Health.

Recent charges and closure:

-Waterloo Star was fined $600 for two infractions including a failure to clean utensils as often as necessary

-King’s Buffet on Hespeler Road in Cambridge. Fine pending for three charges including failing to protect food from contamination or adulteration

-A Kitchener catering operation, located on Lanark Cres. (did not have a name) was ordered closed at the end of April, cited for a number of infractions including including unsanitary conditions of the food storage and preparation area
