Fire destroys two homes

Almost 20 firefighters responded to an early morning fire in Waterloo.

They arrived on scene on Thornhill Place just after 7 o’clock to a fully engulfed fire. Thornhill backs on to The Boardwalk Shopping Centre off Ira Needles Boulevard.

No word on a damage estimate yet, but one home under construction collapsed and the second home it spread to is pretty much destroyed.

A family was living in a third home, they managed to get out safely.

Officials are now investigating the cause.

Waterloo Assistant Deputy Fire Chief Richard Hepditch was asked if the fire is considered suspicious? “I would hazard to speculate on that, but it is always a consideration and fire prevention will conduct a full investigation.” said Hepditch.

The smoke from the fires could be seen in downtown Kitchener.
