New graphic labels covering 75% of cigarette packages

New warning labels for cigarette and cigar packs come into effect Tuesday.

As of Tuesday, every cigar or cigarette pack will have graphic photos and information about the effects of smoking.

They cover 75 per cent of the front and back of the packs and feature photos of things like a cancer-infected tongue or anti-smoking activist Barb Tarbox while she was on her death bed suffering from lung cancer.

Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq said along with preventing people from taking their first puff, the labels will help smokers butt out.

“These warnings also include a Canada-wide toll-free quit line number and a web address where people can learn more about the benefits of quitting,” Aglukkaq said.

Around 17 per cent of Canadians are smokers, which is an all-time low.

But canada still has 37,000 deaths each year thanks to cigarettes and cigars.
