Waterloo Transplant Trot

The average person can save up to 8 lives and enhance the lives of 75 others by simply registering as an organ donor.

It’s a matter of convincing people to register or reminding them.

That’s the idea behind today’s Waterloo Transplant Trot: a 5k walk in Waterloo Park aimed at celebrating life after receiving a transplant and bringing awareness to organ and tissue donation.

It gets underway at 10 o’clock.

Race Director Carol Dubeau tells 570 news it’s not about raising money but making people more aware.

There are 1,583 people on organ waiting lists in Ontario, but there aren’t enough donors.

Locally, she says we are making progress.

Dubeau says less than two years ago, only 13% of people in Waterloo-Wellington had signed their donor cards.

The rate is now 28%.
