With summer just around the corner, local food banks are hoping residents will dig deep today.

In fact, that’s the name of today’s one day region-wide food drive: DIG IN. 35 sites across Waterloo Region will be collecting food between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. with donations going to The Food Bank of Waterloo Region and the Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank.

The Food Bank of Waterloo Region Executive Director Wendy Campbell says “We are seeing some empty racks in our warehouse now.  Spring donations have been lower than usual so far this year.  If each person donated just 1 lb of food it would provide over 600,000 meals in Waterloo Region.”

Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank Executive Director Pat Singleton says “Our goal for DIG IN is to have every person involved in some way.  Food and cash donations are important. So is understanding why donations are needed. Each person that needs our help has a unique story that led them here.”

Peanut butter, canned meat and fish, canned fruit, rice and beans in sauce are among the items most in need.
