The potential for fireworks tonight at the Waterloo Catholic District School Board has been extinguished.

Trustee Anthony Piscitelli has withdrawn a motion that pitched the formation of a gay-straight alliance group.

He tells today’s Record he made the decision after being asked to do so by the board’s chair and also due to the realization it would in all likelihood be defeated.

The motion created a major stir with those opposed saying the issue should not be taken up in Catholic schools.

He told the paper such a divisive debate would not serve the best interests of the students.
