It’s a production that has been referred to as revolutionary and a phenomenon.  RENT has been a world-wide success for years and now it takes to the stage at Kitchener’s Registry Theatre.

Playing the role of Joanne Jefferson is Sarrah Scott and she tells 570 News why she was so excited to join the cast.

“Its broken records on Broadway, it won several Tony’s, it’s won major awards because it’s real.  And it talks about life and it doesn’t try to sugarcoat things, it really speaks a very clear message about this particular generation and some of the difficulties that they’ve faced.”

RENT is a Tony Award winner for Best Musical and has also won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a big part of that success is the soundtrack.  The songs and story seem to resonate with audiences of all ages.  Featuring songs like “Seasons of Love” and the title track “Rent” – it truly is a tremendous musical experience.

For Scott – she had some work to do with the music telling 570 News that the soundtrack pushed her out of her comfort zone.

“I’m used to singing the pretty fluffy kind of stuff and this is such a rock…hard edge kind of sound that it’s really pushed all of us I think.”

All of the cast members are from the Region or surrounding area and don’t be fooled – it’s a big cast with a lot of moving parts and Scott really loves its diversity.

“There are so many different personalities, there are so many different types of people, some of us are kind of working already others are university students, we have a couple of high school students in it, and it’s just such a diverse group…it’s great!”

There will only be 8 performances and opening night it tonight (April 26th).  The production will run until May 5th and here’s a list of the dates and times.
