Have you seen…Harvey?

A Pulitzer-prize winning comedy that was presented on Broadway back in 1944 – is coming to the St. Jacobs Country Playhouse for 3 weeks beginning tomorrow.

Artistic Director for Drayton Entertainment Alex Mustakas gives 570 News the lowdown on the storyline of “Harvey.”

“It’s about a character that has this imaginary rabbit and in essence the play is about accepting peoples differences and being respectful of those who kind of live their lives off the beaten track.  Today it has many universal themes but we can relate it to many aspects of today’s society.”

Audiences are being invited to suspend their disbelief while entering the world of one Elwood P. Dowd.

He’s a man who claims to have an unseen friend named Harvey, who is described as a six-foot, three-and-a-half-inch tall…rabbit.

Mustakas says the production features a tremendous cast – including in the lead role of Elwood.

“The lead character (that Jimmy Stewart played in the film) is played by an actor named Ted Simonett and he really brings a sensitivity and charm to this role that’s needed and he’s surrounded by some incredible actors.”

As for what audiences can expect, Mustakas says at the core of this production – it’s a comedy.

“It was written in ’44 and produced in ’44 right in the middle of World War II obviously and when it was presented on Broadway it was a little bit of escapism…enough for people to come in and enjoy a few laughs but there were some social issues that it dealt with.”

“Harvey” opens tomorrow and runs for three weeks at the St. Jacobs Country Playhouse.
