2012 OHL Priority Draft

The Kitchener Rangers selected Matt Schmalz as their first pick at the 2012 OHL Priority Draft on Saturday. Schmalz who played with the Southern Tier Admirals Minor Midget team, went 17th overall and tallied 23 goals and 18 assists in 35 games for the Admirals during the 2011-12 regular season.

In the third round the Rangers picked up Ryan MacInnis 46th overall. The 6 foot 3, 175 pound MacInnis played with the St. Louis Blues U16’s Minor Midget team last season. Ryan is the son of former Ranger and hockey hall of fame defenceman Al Macinnis. 

In the fourth round the Ranger selected Darby Llewellyn of the Detroit Honeybaked U16’s Minor Midget team.

Here are the Kitchener Rangers selections for the first 10 rounds in the 2012 OHL Priority Draft.

Round 1 – Matt Schmalz (Southern Tier)

Round 4 – Darby Llewellyn (Detroit Honeybaked U16’s)

Round 6 – Kegan Blasby (Markham Waxers)

Round 7 – 128th overall – Ty Learn (Southern Tier)

Round 8 – Jake Evans (Mississauga Rebels)

Round 8 – Frank Hora (Buffalo Jr. Sabres)

Round 9 – Robbie Manchurek (Sun County Panthers)

Round 10 – Chris Poletek (Halton Hurricanes)

Round 12 – Danylo Znacko (Toronto Marlboros)

Round 12 – Nick Magyar (Cleveland Barons U16’s)

Round 14 – Ethan Spaxman (Guelph)

Round 15 – Mitchell Binnie (Markham Majors)

The Erie Otters selected 15 year old Connor McDavid first overall. McDavid played with the Toronto Marlboros Minor Midget team. He was granted exceptional player status by Hockey Canada last month.
