First results show: 2 acts advance to “Canada’s Got Talent” finals

It was elimination night for some contestants on Citytv’s “Canada’ Got Talent” Tuesday night, as two semifinalists  — opera singer Julie Lafountaine and dance crew Freshh — moved on to the finals.

Fresh, the seven-member group from Vancouver, B.C., has danced with Canadian music artist K-Os at the closing ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Lafontaine, who is from Montreal, Que., showcased her larger-than-life voice in a performance of “Libiamo” from La Traviata for the grand finale of the first live performance show.

On Tuesday’s episode, the top two YouTube acts from the “Last Chance Auditions” were also revealed, rounding out the list of 39 acts.

On Monday, the show went live for the first time, with the semifinalists performing in the one-hour show.

Before the lights went up, show producer John Brunton said he was thrilled that Monday’s show was live for the first time.

“I can’t hardly wait for people to see these acts and how they progress from the first time they’ve seen them in the audition shows,” Brunton said.

Brunton said the show will contain “seven acts from all across the country — from fire acts to rock bands, to opera, to martial arts groups.”

He added that the viewers will now have the power.

“The show is now in the hands of Canada; they’re going to decide who moves into the finale. Canada votes, Canada decides,” Brunton said.

Contestants are competing for the grand prize includes $100,000, a Nissan GTR worth $105,000, a Las Vegas show, and an appearance at the Citytv New Year’s Eve bash.
