Goodyear on RIM

Minister of State for Science and Technology, Gary Goodyear appeared Greater KW Chamber of Commerce event today, and was asked to comment on RIM..

The Cambridge North Dumfries MP was asked if the Canadian government would block a foreign buy out of RIM, if CEO Thorsten Heins turnaround plan fails. Goodyear says all of those types of cases are “weighed against the national net benefit for Canadians before any decisions are made.”

Would Canada would help prop up RIM if their financial situation got dire, like done for the auto industry in the 2008 economic collapse?

“They’re two different areas; the automotive industry is an integrative sector, through-out the United States. There is harmonization and regulation, and the workers and parts cross border sometimes two and three and four times a day. It’s an entirely different situation”

When asked what is Canada doing to prevent intellectual property from being sold off, Goodyear says that “within the next couple of months, Canada will be reviewing that type of legislation.”
