COU applaud throne speech

Yesterday’s Speech from the Throne confirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing the affordability of postsecondary education for students.

Ontario universities applaud government’s renewed commitments to education.

Bonnie Patterson, President and CEO of the Council of Ontario Universities (COU) tells 570 News she is very happy with the announcement.

“We strongly support measures that improve access for students and that sufficiently fund the university programs, initiatives and facilities that allow institutions to offer quality programs and remain competitive on the world stage,” says Bonnie Patterson.

“This is a big and bold move and it will make a big difference in many students lives.”

Patterson adds the significant commitment will hopefully be enough to motivate those once weary of postsecondary education.

The Ontario government will reimburse students with 30 per cent of the average university tuition, or up to $1,600 and $730 for college tuition, for those students with a family income under $160,000.

This will cost $423 million a year when fully implemented.

The government has also reaffirmed the addition of 60,000 new spaces at universities and colleges so every willing and qualified student can attend.

Patterson wrapped up by saying, “…it is fortunate that the government is recognizing the importance of this and the need for it.”
