A “heads up”

We have an update to a story heard on 570 News last week regarding a Kitchener methadone clinic and its concerned neighbours.

Kitchener City Council heard a unanimously approved reworded motion asking for a “heads-up” prior to a methadone clinic opening.

The motion asks the Ministry of Health, College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Pharmacists Association of Ontario and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health to give advance information to municipalities before these clinics open in residential neighbourhoods.

Councillor Frank Etherington tells 570 News so many groups are named because it’s difficult to pin down, who actually approves methadone clinics, “it appears that no one does, even though the province pumps $4 Million a year into methadone clinics, it’s spread wide through-out these health authorities.” he says.

The motion is going to other communities through the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, to ask for their support and copies forwarded to local MPP’s, the Minister of Health and the Premier.

On top of this, the operators of the clinic at King and Sheldon, have offered to bring in security guards and get together with neighbouring residents and retailers to talk about some of the issues.
