BC Lions, fans help tackle hunger

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Fans heading to tonight’s BC Lions game are encouraged to bring along a non-perishable food item.  If you do, you can get your picture taken with the Grey Cup.

It’s all part of the Tackle Hunger Food Drive.  The Lions are teaming up with the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society to get food in the hands of people who need help.

“Pasta, tuna, peanut butter and then as well cash donations.  With the purchasing power that the Greater Vancouver Food Bank has, they can put the cash to real good use,” says the food drive’s Brian Collins.

He adds today’s event is a good reminder that people should try and donate throughout the year and not just during major holidays like Thanksgiving or Christmas.

“Unfortunately, people need support from the food bank year round and this is a great way to remind the people of Vancouver to get out and support your community and support your local food bank.”

A donation stand will be set up at the north end of Empire Field at 5:30 p.m. and donations will be accepted until the end of the first quarter.  Since 2003, Lions fans have raised 177,665 pounds of food for the GVFBS.

The Lions are taking on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and kick-off is at 7 p.m.
