Mayor continues to be grilled over riot

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Ground has been broken on a new supportive housing complex in Vancouver, but the mayor is still being grilled about the riot.

“All the questions around how many number of police officers were deployed, where they were, the role of alcohol, the role of the city’s live sites, all of that will be factored into these reviews,” says Mayor Gregor Robertson.

He adds that the person who will chair the independent review ordered by the City and the province should be selected in the next week.

“It takes time and careful preparation to ensure we get the right people in place there.  I think we’re very close to nailing that down now,” he adds.

Meanwhile, the supportive housing project is the eighth of 14 planned in the city under the Provincial Homelessness Initiative. It has 147 units and will cost about $40 million.

Abbotsford Police hope to thank civilians

Abbotsford Police want to thank seven people for helping out an officer who was caught in a dangerous situation during the Stanley Cup riot in Vancouver.

Const. Ian MacDonald says as the mayhem erupted, one of his fellow officers was trying to help an unconscious man on the street.

He adds the small group formed a human shield around the officer and protected the member from threats from the crowd.

MacDonald explains the officer working that night never got to acknowledge the civilians for their bravery.  The man was eventually transported to hospital and treated for stab wounds.
