More wild weather

For the third day in a row an early-morning thunderstorm caused some damage and power outages in the Region.

A severe thunderstorm passing over the Region at about 4 a.m. left some 1,700 Kitchener Wilmot Hydro customers without power, although only briefly.

That outage was caused by a mere two-metre long tree branch falling on a hydro wire at Lancaster and Frederick Streets in Kitchener.

A witness in a rental house at that corner tells 570 News there was an incredible light show and a sizzling and popping sound.

Meanwhile, not far away on Weichel Street, near Victoria and Westmount, a large tree limb fell on and snapped a hydro line, which lay on the street sparking and flaming, causing a smaller power outage.

And on Queen Street at Weber, a huge tree limb snapped and fell, completely covering Queen from one curb to the other.

Check out the significant damage caused by a nasty batch of thunderstorms that rolled through the city of Guelph on Wednesday morning.

Also of note, Regional Police say a small fire at the Chemtura Plant in Elmira was caused by this morning’s severe thunderstorm.

Police say a vent stack fire on the roof broke out at about 3:40 a.m.

There were no injuries nor any release of chemicals into the environment.

Plant manager, Joseph Olejarz says the plant was hit by “severe lightning,” but his own staff got the small fire out in just a few minutes.

The Woolwich Fire Department attended the scene.

Olejarz says they temporarily stopped plant processes while they investigate what happened, inspect equipment, and make sure everything is safe.
